Mount Meru Climbing

The second-highest peak in Tanzania, Mount Meru is situated within Arusha National Park. The peak is about 4566 meters above sea level. Located 45 minutes’ drive from Arusha, this mountain is a stratovolcano. As the mountain peak did erupt about 100 years ago, so it is considered legally a dormant volcano now.

Often referred to as “Kilimanjaro’s little brother”, this peak is famous for its amazing scenery, craters, lakes, and wildlife. The vegetation that dominates this area includes pine trees and African redwood. There is a great possibility of spotting a variety of wild animals like baboons, giraffes, buffalo, and antelopes while approaching the summit.

Compared to Mount Kilimanjaro, climbing Mount Meru requires some level of expertise. Often tourists prefer to take up the challenge of scaling Mount Meru to acclimatize to higher altitudes. Unlike Mountain Kilimanjaro, there is only one official route to climb Mount Meru- the Momella Route.

Depending on the fitness levels of climbers, it will take around 3 to 4 days to ascend and descend Mount Meru. The best time to scale the mountain is between December and February.
